SIM cards & eSIM

A local SIM, eSIM or roaming package can keep you connected. Compare the contents and terms: an eSIM does not automatically include a Vietnamese phone number or ordinary call minutes.

Checked on 31 October 2026. Offers, registration and activation differ by provider and SIM type. Confirm current prices, allowances and coverage directly with the provider.

Check your device before departure

A physical SIM requires a suitable SIM slot. For eSIM, both your specific device variant and provider must support it. A carrier lock can prevent another SIM from working; check with your current carrier rather than relying solely on the model name.

Compare the complete package

Ask exactly what you are buying: total data or a daily allowance, duration, any speed reduction, hotspot use, and local calling and SMS options. A data-only travel eSIM may work differently from a local mobile line.

  • Ask whether validity starts at purchase, installation, activation or the first network connection.
  • Keep your receipt and the official support contact.

Register with the actual provider

Use an official shop or authorised outlet, for example Viettel, VinaPhone or MobiFone. Bring your original valid passport and any requested entry or residence documents. Registration must match your details; avoid an unknown line already registered to someone else.

  • A portrait photo or identity check may be part of the procedure.
  • Submit documents only through the provider’s verified channel. Do not share banking codes with sellers.

Leave with a working connection

Ask the seller to explain installation and activation. Test mobile data with Wi-Fi switched off, check the selected data SIM and ask how to view the remaining allowance. Test ordinary calls if they are included.

Keep your home number reachable

Need SMS codes on your home number? Check the required dual-SIM and roaming settings with your home carrier and device manufacturer. Keeping two lines active can incur extra charges. Select the travel line for data and follow both providers’ instructions.

If service stops or you change phones

Changing phones can trigger another identity check. Use the official app or shop rather than automatically following an unexpected message link. Do not delete an eSIM as your first troubleshooting step: ask the provider whether the same QR code can be used again.
